Russian space industry on road back

Reforms in the Russian space industry have changed the landscape for the country and put Russia in a strong position on a go forward basis, according to a report in Pravda.

Igor Burenkov, a member of the board of JSC United Rocket and Space Corporation, said Russia has moved past a difficult period for the Russian space industry.

"The reforms in the Russian space industry started, but there is a lot to be done, and not everything is in order in the industry. We have achievements, of course, but we may not always know how to present them on the market. This has been particularly visible during recent years. In the last three or four years, the situation in the space industry has started to improve. Russian authorities started investing in the industry, and the money is being used purposefully. Many projects have finally been completed, because companies received an opportunity to finish them. For example, the Angara rocket project has moved to the testing stage,” said Burenkov.

Following initial checks, the satellites will be handled by the Galileo Control Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany and the in-orbit testing facility in Redu, Belgium.

Burenkov said Russian production technologies are now closer to industry standards.

"This is what we need. To catch up, which of course cannot be done overnight, especially if it goes about a complex process of creating complicated electronic products. Russia needs to catch up with many of its competitors. This is a well-known fact, but it is quite possible to overcome all problems and difficulties."
