Satellite Internet in Mauritania

How To Buy | Technical Support | Share

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania lies in West Africa and is the eleventh largest country on the continent. With 90 percent of its land lying in the Sahara Desert, the country is subject to harsh conditions, with most of its population centred on the South where there is more rain. Approximately one third of Mauritania’s 4.2 million inhabitants live in the capital, Nouakchott but there are also nomadic groups of population. Around 40 percent of the population live in poverty.

In Mauritania, as in many developing countries, fixed line penetration is low, but the mobile phone network has seen rapid growth in recent years with more licenses being issued that are attracting foreign MNOs. However, broadband is lagging well behind. There are currently 714, 132 Internet users in the country, with a penetration rate of 16.7 percent. The country’s development has been severely hampered by political unrest, but the government has taken on board the importance of the development of its ICT infrastructure with the provision of broadband services being a high priority. Mauritania has been engaged for several years in the development of a strategy to provide universal access to broadband Internet. The nature of the country, with its poor telecommunications infrastructure, will mean that VSAT is set to play a key part in its ICT development. There is an undeniable correlation between broadband and the development of an economy. BusinessCom Network’s rich experience in the deployment of VSAT networks that enable high speed communications can help to make this transformation.

Potential for Oil & Gas Industry

Despite being rich in natural resources (50 percent of its total export comes from iron ore), Mauritania has low GDP and is very dependent upon agriculture and livestock. However, oil was discovered in 2001 and this holds huge potential for the country with interest from foreign investors. Today, Mauritania has an expanding oil industry, with the potential for more reserves to be found. BusinessCom Networks offers a wide range of solutions that can accommodate all aspects of mission critical oil and gas communications, from prospecting and exploration all the way through to drilling and production.

The development of Mauritania’s ICT infrastructure will be critical in its development as a nation. Years of political uncertainty, security issues and sheer poverty have been responsible for holding the country back. However, with a growing oil industry, its natural resources and the liberalisation of its telecommunications market, there are opportunities that can enable the nation to become more prosperous and to deliver more to its people.

Broadband access is central to so much of this, and with a young population, many have the potential to grow up as ‘Digital Natives’. BusinessCom Networks can cater for the full range of communications requirements across Mauritania no matter whether it is a business, an individual or an organisation.
