Oman is located in the Arab Peninsula, in a strategically important location. Its land borders the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and it also has maritime borders with Iraq and Pakistan. Oman’s economy depends heavily upon oil exports. The country has the 25th largest oil reserves in the world. Tourism is becoming an increasingly important economic sector to Oman and the country has become the fastest growing tourist destination in the Middle East with the majority of its growth focused around cultural tourism.  Oman has a population of over 4 million with large number of ex-patriates. Around half live in Muscat and the Batinah Coastal Plain.

As in other countries across the Middle East, broadband is becoming more accessible and very popular, especially with the younger generation. In 2013, the Information Technology Authority of Oman published a survey on Access to and Use of Information and Communications Technology by Households and Individuals. This took into account the habits of 11,000 randomly selected households and found some interesting statistics. 90% possessed a mobile or smartphone and 80% owned at least one computer. 80% had access to the Internet but the access but more than 2 in 3 users said that the speed was too slow and the price was too high. The majority of people accessed the Internet via mobile broadband and 42% did not have any coverage.

The government of Oman has committed to improving broadband access across the country and aims to have all homes and businesses connected to its national broadband infrastructure by 2040. There are currently a total of four mobile networks offering 3G coverage and there is an Internet penetration rate of 69.8.

VSAT Solutions in Oman

BusinessCom Networks can help to boost broadband access throughout Oman with its VSAT services that can provide cost-effective and high-speed broadband to businesses and households across the country. For the 42% of Omanis who do not have Internet coverage, BusinessCom can provide a tailored, fully managed solution that can deliver affordable services as price has become a barrier to entry for many. VSAT networks are also highly scalable, as they have no reliance upon terrestrial infrastructure, thus making them very suitable for businesses, enabling them to grow their communications network as they do.

With so many Omanis accessing the Internet over mobile broadband connections, Mobile Network Operators have the opportunity to extend their networks out to more remote regions of Oman through the use of VSAT. Deployment is not only fast but is also much cheaper in comparison to the construction of cell towers which are often to cost prohibitive to rollout to outlying areas. BusinessCom’s rural mobile networks deliver low-cost cellular voice, SMS and data, accommodating all available telephones and at highly affordable subscriber rates. BusinessCom’s dedicated team of technicians can assist you with your network design and implementation and manage the network. Our in-country installers are available to get you up and running as soon as you are ready and can enable you to scale your network as and when you are ready to grow.
