Satellite Internet Access in St Kitts and Nevis

How To Buy | Technical Support | Share

St Kitts and Nevis is the smallest nation in the Americas with a population of just over 54,800. These two mountainous islands are part of the Leeward Islands and are separated by a channel just 3km wide. St Kitts is the larger of the two islands, measuring 37km long and featuring a mountain range and a fertile valley. The island is home to volcanic, sandy beaches. Nevis features silver sandy beaches and coconut groves and features a central peak, Mount Nevis. The islands have become a hotspot for tourists, attracted by the idyllic surroundings. Sugar had been the major source of income for the island but the industry closed in 2005. Today, the island is dependent upon tourism which has seen huge growth over a short period but transportation, manufacturing and construction are also growing sectors for the islands.

Information and Сommunications Technology

In terms of communications on St Kitts and Nevis, the government has placed a heavy emphasis on the importance of ICT across the islands and, as a result, fixed Internet penetration has been pushed up to 80% and the islands have the highest broadband subscription rate of all the Latin American and Caribbean countries. This could in some part be due to the fact that the islands are small and it has therefore been easier to rollout infrastructure but the government has played an integral part in developing a competitive telecommunications environment as well as taking part in the active promotion of basic education in terms of digital literacy and access to ICT services. The government implemented a National ICT Strategic Plan in 2006 which also pushed ICT integration onto the educational curriculum. There have also been initiatives that have promoted e-governance and access for all through community hubs. Broadband is also more affordable than in other Caribbean countries, which can be a big barrier to access. Due to the good access to fixed broadband services, the mobile broadband infrastructure on St Kitts has taken more of a back seat, but it is being rolled out gradually to further enhance connectivity to help businesses and individuals.

In a 2015 FCC report, it was confirmed that 55 million Americans (17% of the population) lacked access to advanced broadband and that a significant Digital Divide exists between urban and rural America with over half of all Americans lacking access to 25Mbps/3Mbps service. The report also found that 35% of schools lacked access to fibre networks that can support the digital learning tools of today.

Broadband Infrastructure

Though St Kitts and Nevis undoubtedly has a strong broadband infrastructure, there are still parts of the country that are in need of connectivity. This may be due to the location of certain communities that are in harder to reach areas and the cost of rolling out fixed line broadband to them. In these cases, BusinessCom Networks can provide a highly affordable and scalable satellite broadband solution to meet demand in more remote communities. BusinessCom enables local ISPs to reach into new areas and gain new subscribers.
