Satellite Internet in Kyrgyzstan

How To Buy | Technical Support | Share

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country situated in Central Asia. Bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China, it is a mountainous country and geographically isolated due to the tricky terrain. Kyrgyzstan is home to just over 6 million people. The economy is largely reliant upon its extensive gold and other mineral reserves and metallurgy is a key industry. Agriculture is an important sector and the rearing of livestock is the most popular agricultural source of income, resulting in products such as wool, meat and dairy products. The agricultural sector produces a range of crops including wheat, sugar beet, potatoes, cotton, tobacco and fruit and vegetables.

Geographic and Demographic Challenges

The telecoms infrastructure across Kyrgyzstan is in need of significant improvement. There has been significant growth in the mobile market, but this has also caused the decline of the fixed line market. There has also been an increase in Internet use and the mobile phenomenon in the country is expected to be the driving force behind the growth of the Internet in the future. 4G is available, but is very much in the process of being rolled out. Internet access is very much centred on the two largest cities in Kyrgyzstan, Bishtek and Osh and only a very small amount of the population have the Internet at home. Although a small amount of rural Internet is available, it is not at all widespread and is also unreliable. The majority of people access the Internet either at work, on their mobile phones when they can or in Internet cafes and public access areas. In 2016, just over 2 million people had access to the Internet – that’s 34.4 percent of the population.

For a country that is home to such challenging terrain, as Kyrgyzstan is, satellite-based Internet access and also cellular backhaul services, would make a great deal of sense. In fact, satellite would provide the ideal solution as it can be deployed anywhere, regardless of the geography of a country. It is scalable, flexible, can provide the entire range of IP services, and it is also cost-effective with a good, fast return on investment.
