Midland, Texas-based AST SpaceMobile, a startup satellite broadband direct-to-device designer and manufacturer, has pushed back the launch of its initial five commercial satellites by at least half a year. This delay stems from the company encountering component supply chain issues and challenges in developing the core antenna technology for these satellites. AST SpaceMobile is developing the SpaceMobile satellite constellation, a space-based cellular broadband network intended to enable unmodified smartphones to connect in areas lacking terrestrial coverage.

The company went public in 2021 by merging with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), a shell company that lists on a stock exchange with capital from public investors searching for an investment opportunity. This deal raised around $417 million for AST SpaceMobile, but the company has been burning through cash amid production delays and cost overruns that have helped send shares downward after closing at $11.81 on their first day of trading. While the company has taken steps to mitigate the production problems, the setbacks have had a major impact on its stock price, highlighting the difficulties it is encountering as it works to deploy its ambitious space-based cellular broadband network.
