Compact CM100 Covers Every Iridium Certus Tier

Intellian Technologies has introduced a new terminal built specifically for the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, the network that helps rescue mariners during emergencies at sea. The announcement, made Thursday, marks the company’s latest addition to its lineup of maritime safety hardware. GMDSS has been a cornerstone of vessel safety for years, and manufacturers continue refining the equipment that keeps ships connected when it matters most. Intellian’s newest release, the CM100 GMDSS, is designed to modernize that connection while keeping installation simple for crews and technicians alike.

What sets the CM100 apart is its compact, all-in-one construction. Rather than requiring separate housings for the below-deck unit and the user terminal, Intellian combined both into a single safety control unit, cutting down on space, wiring complexity, and installation time. The terminal supports full distress alerting, safety voice communication, maritime safety information, ship security alerting, and long-range identification and tracking, covering nearly every function a modern GMDSS setup needs. Shipowners managing older vessels may find it just as useful that the terminal can often be reused with a ship’s existing legacy antenna cable, provided that cable remains in good condition, which helps reduce both cost and downtime during upgrades.
This launch rounds out Intellian’s offering in the maritime safety segment with a dedicated terminal for each tier of Iridium’s Certus network, making it the only manufacturer to have that level of coverage. Company CEO Eric Sung called it the company’s largest portfolio of GMDSS systems built on this platform, with a customizable solution available for ships of almost any size or need. He described the CM100 as an evolving, contemporary solution that would let users move away from old safety networks without losing connectivity, no matter where their ships sail. For fleet operators weighing when and how to modernize aging safety equipment, that kind of flexibility can simplify the decision considerably.
The connectivity underlying the CM100 draws on a lower-bandwidth tier of the wider Iridium network, and its reach has been growing beyond maritime use as well. Some airlines already rely on that same network for functions like credit card authentication and inflight messaging, and low-gain antennas built around it recently passed a landmark series of aviation performance tests. That milestone opens a path toward safety-focused aviation hardware, built on the same lightweight, low-power foundation, that manufacturers are now weighing as a retrofit option for existing aircraft fleets. The underlying network was never built with a single industry in mind, and different sectors keep finding new ways to adapt it to their own safety needs.
